This leaves out that many Northern Democrats did support the 13th Amendment, while most Southern Democrats opposed it. The parties back then were very different from today, and both have changed a lot since the Civil War.

At the time these amendments were passed democrats were conservative and republicans were liberal. They switched somewhere in the 1960’s.
