That reminds me of a time I was in Portugal and ordered a pizza. I asked if they could leave off a topping and they said no because that’s not how the pizza is made 😐

not to play devil’s advocate, but americans seem way too attached to being able to customise… i’m a chef and often have people argue that “it’s fine” for me to remove 5 items from a dish (which i would never serve as it wouldn’t taste as good and is not what i have created). jambon beurre is a cold sandwich, it wouldn’t be the same “dish” warm…

I’ve lived in Paris now for 18 years, French are very rigid but can change due to trends. So if someone famous wants their baguette toasted, rest assured everyone will follow.

I asked for a pain au chocolat that I could see in the case, like I could see it sitting there, and they said no that it was a food for mornings and early afternoon only and that they’re not a food meant for the evenings. I said I understand if it’s been sitting there a while, they said that’s not the issue, it’s that you’re not supposed to eat that type of thing in the evening

In French shops and restaurants, the customer is not the king. You are a guest. They make things their way. If you don’t like it, there are other places.

For French people in the comments- it isn’t just Americans who customize things at restaurants you need to travel more 😂

That's normal. If you are in France you eat french way, if you are in China, you eat Chinese way, if you are in US... you bring your french food with you😂

I’m married to a Spaniard. I had a glass of milk in the evening and then said I wanted a snack. He’s was horrified. “You can’t have a snack after the milk. Milk in the evening closes the door on eating anything else. There’s nothing after the milk”.

next time order a croque Monsieur for toasted ham and cheese and stop making a caprice over that. would you ask a Mexican to warm a guacamole? Maybe it’s not French culture, maybe it’s you who is used to do things your way and can’t accommodate with another culture.

I think this is why France manages to retain it's traditions and quality of life, because of all these rules and formalities
