@zaydupree: Replying to @uwu_the_uwuer nicaraguan sign language: the newest natural language created from scratch (probably) #language #linguistics #nicaragua #asl #signlanguage #LearnOnTikTok
Why did Nicaraguans not know they were deaf? Why did they not have their own sign language already?

The reason, besides being unethical, that this could only be done with deaf children is because newborns (even preemies - NICU nurse here) are not tabula rasa. Far from it. By the second trimester, they can hear their mother speak, and they begin to hear nearby talkers sometime in the third trimester. So babies have already made neural pathways for speech. The plasticity of those early neural pathways could mean that they might lose that early speech understanding. But, would they? This was one of the many reasons I was so horrified about what Georgia did to Adriana Smith and Baby Chance. I lost my last account because I was so enraged about that.

Weren’t they able to read Spanish, though? That’s far from isolated from language.

Have you ever seen the game Sign? It's a role playing game based on those students developing a sign language and is really neat

Can you do a video on Jamaican Gypsy? Not Patois. Gypsy was a language we learnt, which I am still confused about. It is no longer spoken, but was common in the 1980s.

popping seamlessly into fluent pronunciation in another language is the linguistic equivalent of the main guy on screen leaning in and whispering I'm Batman

However, as the language develops and spreads to more users it’s isolation from all other languages diminishes. I think you could easily contribute part of its discreteness to the fact that it has had more interaction with other languages that do have that discreteness since its creation.

Can you do a video on upstate ny accents. I’m interested in how rappers like Rx Papi or Westside Gunn might sound to non new yorkers compared to nyc rappers

It’s also worth noting that the universal grammar hypothesis is falling apart as we speak
