Just for piece of mind I would tee in a direct reading gauge. I like to know exactly numbers on temperature. It won't fix the problem but you will know exactly how hot it is getting.

Could be a few issues. Could be head gasket leak, you may need to upgrade to a heavy duty aluminum radiator. Also what size tires do you have? Do you still have stock 3:21 gears? Manual or auto?

My jeep did the same. I put a race radiator in it a little pricey, but never had a problem again. Overheating and jeeps is a pretty common problem. I’m pretty sure the radiators are too small for them. Factory

If it has over 100,000 miles it needs a complete gasket replacement. Very common

I would look at fuel delivery sensors. As the altitude goes higher, the air gets thinner, making your engine, run, leaner and hotter. it could be something as simple as an oxygen sensor, not realizing that it needs to give a richer fuel mixture to cool the engine.

If it was mine, I would have it pressure tested for a leaky headgasket.

aluminum radiator with a bigger core. you may try the temperature sensor for the fan.

I have a 2007 Wrangler, I had the same problem when I was going up the mountain and on the trail. So I put on a transmission cooler and an auxiliary fan. Haven't had any problems since.

If you’re that high in elevation, the air is super thin and your vehicle is begging for air and it will get hot

you might have a trans temp sensor that is connected to your water temp gage.

2012’s are notorious for cracked heads and burnt valves. They actually extended the warranty on them because of this issue. The cooling passages in the head were not sized right.

Get a obd2 scanner and JScan app and manually turn the fan on with the app. Also flash out the heater core. Mine is a 2012 as well.

You need an extra fan on the radiator or go 3 or4 core radiator

Is there a smell when it happens? If so, could be the catalytic converter starting to clog.

I read about this in a jeep forum. Said a forced re-learn will help with the air / fuel mixture. Disco battery, hold gas pedal down (engine not running) to drain power from computer. Hook back up n start.
