The third time he repeats it I’m too overwhelmed to even continue trying to understand what he’s saying so I just giggle and go “ohh” and hope it wasn’t a question.

The sounds of underwater life with @Artlist.io 🪸 This sound was recorded as part of a project in Tuvalu, in collaboration with Artlist. We were sent to this island nation, slowly disappearing due to rising sea levels, to document its culture, daily life and soundscapes. During my stay in Tuvalu, I recorded several underwater soundscapes, along the coast of Funafuti and near one of the atolls. In some places, I picked up a constant crackling, like a campfire beneath the ocean. A grainy, hypnotic sound, fascinating to listen to. That sound comes from snapping shrimp (Alpheidae). They snap their claws together so fast that they create a bubble of cavitation, which collapses and produces a sharp popping noise. When many of them are active in the same area, their individual snaps combine and form a continuous layer of sound. One day, while I was recording, a group of children from Funafuti came over, curious about the cable going into the water. I handed them the headphones. One by one, they listened to the sounds coming from below. We stayed there for a while, not saying much. Just listening, connected through the sounds of the ocean. 🌴 This recording, like many others from Tuvalu, is now available on Artlist.io. You can download it and use it in your own creative work via the link in bio. Several complete sound packs from this trip are available on the platform. You’ll find beach birds and subtle crab movements in Micro Wilderness, textured surface recordings in Amorphic Textures, and voices from everyday life in Island Chatter. The Tribal Hymn pack features a range of traditional vocal recordings, including fatele performances and children’s chorales in classrooms, reflecting the richness of Tuvaluan musical expression. Hits and Rhythms brings together a variety of percussive elements recorded across the islands. For more atmospheric recordings, White Beach offers calm seaside textures, Tropical Rain captures the rhythm of Tuvalu’s rainfall, and Roadside Traffic captures the everyday sounds of the island’s roads. 🙏 A huge thank you to Artlist for making this journey possible and to the amazing team I had the chance to travel with: Tristan, Zeke, Spencer, Matthew, Fabio, Josh, Lusien. It's more important than ever to preserve these places which are threatened by climate change and rising seas. I hope these visual, sonic and musical resources inspire others to create and share, bringing more visibility to Tuvalu and its culture. #nature #sound #science #fyp #pourtoi
