every time I watch it I'm so annoyed because it's so... unnecessary. the actual story isn't racist. there are, narratively, no overtly racist undertones. the visuals however are inspired by incredibly racist depictions, mainly in a misguided attempt to make the men in general look unappealing

Mononoke is so peak but GOD do I absolutely hate hate hate that episode because of the racism. I really hope they reanimate it (which they probably never will) but maybe there’s hope since there is another movie coming out💔💔

To be fair mostly all the male characters are made like this and theres only like one black (or at least a darker skinned) girl in the anime that has no problems at all but in my opinion i think it could be a LOT worse

I think if it bothers you, and distracts you too much you should not watch the rest of it. It doesn’t get any worse than the character never shows back up again however I think that if it mars your viewing experience it’s okay to stop. I’m black and Mononoke is one of my favorite anime. I’m fine with people not watching it for this reason. It’s not exactly the type of anime that would appeal to the gen pop anyway so I’m not sure why ppl keep recommending the uninitiated to watch it. But if it intrigues you enough to keep going, it is one of the most unique viewing experiences you will ever see in Anime.

I saw that too and i didnt like it but there are some other dark skinned characters in there that are reallly pretty (they were all women) 😭✌️

Incredibly disappointed. I was planning on watching this too, and I RARELY ever watch anime due to how problematic a lot of them are, so seeing this was very disheartening.

It’s actually so infuriating because they don’t do this again (I believe there’s two other block women, but they’re lighter so they could be just tan). Although every character has stylized lips, his design is so clearly a caricature. It’s so upsetting because the series covers a really interesting and good topic 😭

I despise how they do this to pretty much every man to make them look unappealing besides the mc, his other form is brown and he looks fine they just refuse to make the side characters look normal 😭
