Can't blame him. Previous Mario Kart games didn't include off-road crossing of main roads, and those barriers were very small. This is Nintendo's first open-world racing game, so they don't have much experience guiding players in situations like this. Saying this as an open-world racing game enjoyer.

Not tricking off of any of the ledges and ramps really pisses me off. He probably thinks the game is so boring for only being “hold forward mindlessly” when he’s not engaging with any mechanics and then complains about losing items to something that affects everyone not just him.
