Many Americans arrogantly believe they won the Vietnam War simply because they lost “only” around 58,000 soldiers, while the Vietnamese suffered millions of casualties. But the truth is far more shameful: American troops, much like today’s Israeli forces, committed horrific war crimes. They massacred innocent villagers and defenseless children, just to artificially inflate enemy body counts and justify their failure to defeat the People’s Army of Vietnam and the southern guerrilla fighters of the National Liberation Front. This wasn’t a victory. It was a disgrace.
The U.S. military utterly failed in Vietnam. They did not achieve their central goal of preserving the Republic of South Vietnam. In contrast, the People’s Army of North Vietnam and the southern liberation forces achieved complete success: they drove out the American invaders and toppled their puppet regime. The Vietnamese people’s war of resistance against American imperialism ended in a total and undeniable victory.
That failure came because neither the U.S. military nor its government understood one simple truth: they were not just fighting an army. They were fighting an entire nation, millions of Vietnamese people who refused to live under foreign domination ever again. Every farmer, every student, every mother, every child stood behind the resistance.
The U.S. government backed the puppet regime in South Vietnam not out of noble ideals, but out of pure greed. They knew Vietnam’s coastal waters and lands were rich in minerals and natural resources, and they wanted to exploit them shamelessly once control was secured. The so-called “fight against communism” and the prevention of the domino effect? That was just a convenient excuse, nothing more than a smokescreen to justify an imperialist agenda.
