the tapetum lucidum is such a fascinating part of animal eyes, i wish we had them lol. They’re super visible on cats and cows, and if you’ve ever dissected an animal eye before, you can see how it looks almost aurora-like. It’s beautiful!

They probably won’t be available to the public for a while sadly cause they’re like really cutting edge sfx tech. If you just want to do it for filming there’s some easy low tech camera tricks you can do tho! Kinetik on YouTube has a good tutorial

An ex took me to a bar where they had UV lights and the whole bar went nuts about my eyes, when I looked up. Acuvue Oasis creates an eye shine under UV lights.

They originally did this in the blade runner for the replicants. It’s done using a two way mirror with light reflecting at a certain angle to hit the back part of the eye and reflect back forward again creating a glow. I assume that’s maybe how they did this too!

I’ve been hunting for some that would replicate the og effect and there were *some* that were close but no dice. The closest ones you’ll find for rn are “mirrored” ones inspired by Riddick. They look good for very specific lighting it seems but in average/day light they look v odd. There’s another pair that’s also similar, when you wear them in the light you can’t tell they’re there, but in UV light they glow, but an obvious UV kind of blue glow over the whole iris, not just the center like in the film. Good luck on your hunt for some, let me know if you find something lol

They’re a type scalar lense I would not recommend them personally unless you get them specifically made with an optometrist. I’m an spfx artist and have felt with them a lot. They can damage your eyes if they don’t fit properly.
