@lauraclery: For a child on the spectrum, milestones like this don’t always come “on schedule” they come in their own time.. in their own way. And when they do… they hit different. This isn’t just handwriting. This is focus. This is growth. This is connection. This is years of therapy, support, patience, frustration, hope, and LOVE showing up in that name.

Glad (Galadlóriel) :
The Māori term often used to describe someone with autism in a respectful, affirming way is: "Takiwā Tōnā Anō" 🔹 🥹 literally translated: “In their own time and space.” nice job, Alfie 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

What, like it’s hard? :
As a teacher, it’s WAY more legible than my 5th graders’ writing—great job, Alfie!

You should teach him how to hold the crayon properly.

I love that you're allowing him to hold the crayon how he wants to! Therapists were always trying to get me to make my son choose a hand & "fix" his hold. I refused & said, "If he wants to be ambidextrous, then he can. All I care is he can write."

Something really interesting I found with my autistic kiddos is that it’s said the Māori word for Autism is “Takiwātanga” which means in their own time and space, a milestone is a milestone no matter when it is reached! 🥰

Having him color or push broken crayons into playdough can help him develop and more mature grasp pattern 🤗

Question, does he enjoy practicing writing on a smooth or bumpy surface? That table seems bumpy and this could be one small key (or not) to his working harder on this writing practice. He did great and looks like he’d love to do some kind of building or stringing things thru things with his hands since he is poking his crayon thru the paper margin holes. Maybe get some paper punchers to make fun edge punches. He did excellent and you are killing the parenting game. Take care of yourself and your heart and soul as well as you take care of your kiddos and you are going to be great. You have a LOT of big things going on. Make sure to take a few deep breaths and sleep, eat, call a friend and do your AlAnon and sponsor work. Being apart from a user as a family of one and your life choices don’t always change overnight. You may collect people who need the same level of caregiving and bleed you dry whether it’s in friends, family or relationships. Watch your boundaries and keep practicing them. It takes work and crops up when you least expect it. Set your boundaries strongly with your values and hold them like your life depends on it. ❤️❤️❤️And wooohoo go Alfie!!

I know I'm late to the party, but I immediately started crying for you. these milestones hit so much harder when you have really struggled and put in the work to get there. one of my three is still hitting milestones his twin has long since achieved, and it is nice we get to celebrate him separately!

I'm putting this on an old video so hopefully you see it. Take all your devices to someone who can go line by line through the code. He has keystroke loggers on something. that's how he's getting your passwords. I hope you guys are safe!

You’re doing so great Alfie and Laura! I work with teens who haven’t got adults investing in them or they’ve fallen through the cracks in the system and most can’t write their name this clearly. Keep going Laura! Keep investing and loving and Alfie will do amazingly!
