Replying to @dumbjockenergy As neurodivergent people, we are sent a very clear message: mask and adhere to neurotypical norms, or risk exclusion—or worse yet, risk your safety. For many of us, this is deeply intersectional. The expectation to perform neurotypicality isn’t just about appearing neurotypical. To be read as “acceptable,” we’re also expected to mask within the confines of our gender, our assigned sexuality, our class background, and our racialization. Anything that violates these layered norms becomes too much, too intense, too strange, too different. My PhD found that neurodivergent people who unmask often experience exclusion, isolation, loss of educational and workplace opportunities, and even violence. For many of us, this means living in a constant state of nervous system activation—the fawn response. We suppress our wants, needs, desires, and comfort to keep the neurotypical world comfortable with us. It’s a protective mechanism—but one that comes with enormous emotional, physical, and psychological cost. When you finally drop the mask, you begin to see just how much of yourself you had been suppressing. And the discomfort of realizing this can feel acutely, overwhelmingly intolerable. Have any questions? Does this resonate with your experience? Let me know in the comments. #neurodivergent #autism #ADHD #psychology #MentalHealth
