Steve is honestly such a sweet guy, but let’s be real, Jonathan and Nancy are endgame. They have insane chemistry, they’ve been through a lot together, and Nancy even admitted she never really loved Steve the way she loved Jonathan. And come on, even the actors and their stunt doubles ended up together in real life! I’m not excusing what Jonathan did with the pictures, Steve had every right to be upset, but Jonathan apologized multiple times, and it was clear he genuinely felt awful about it. Nancy forgave him, and that says a lot. Jonathan actually helped her when Barb, her best and only real friend, went missing, while Steve barely cared. Even in season 2, he wasn’t really there for that. Steve needs to move on and stop clinging to something that just isn’t working anymore. If they stayed together, neither of them would be happy. The love just isn’t mutual, and they clearly want different things. Nancy probably feels like staying with Steve would trap her in the same kind of life her mom had, being a housewife, and she doesn’t want. She wants more. Meanwhile, Steve dreams of a big, traditional, happy family. They’re just not aligned anymore, and that’s okay. Steve deserves someone who truly loves him back
