Sen. Gillibrand asks Gabbard about her views on banning TikTok Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., asked former Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard about her views on TikTok in her confirmation hearing Thursday for director of national intelligence. Late last year, Congress passed a law requiring TikTok’s China-based parent company ByteDance to sell the popular social media app to a U.S. buyer by Jan. 19 or be banned from app stores. Former President Joe Biden signed the legislation, but did not enforce the deadline, which was then extended for 75 days by President Donald Trump on his first day in office. Gillibrand listed reasons Congress is concerned about TikTok being a Chinese-owned app, including allowing a foreign government to have access to Americans’ data, and asked Gabbard to explain some of her past statements opposing U.S. ownership of TikTok and dismissing national security concerns. “I understand the concern, senator. I would just reiterate some of my concerns that I stated in the past about how this really is an issue about data privacy,” Gabbard responded. Gabbard is a veteran of the Army National Guard of more than two decades who deployed to Iraq and Kuwait during her service. She does not have a background in intelligence and has come under fire as a nominee for her past positive stances on Russian President Vladimir Putin and former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Gabbard was the first American Samoan and the first Hindu elected to Congress. A former Democrat who ran for president in 2020, she became an independent in 2022 before endorsing Trump’s comeback campaign. #gabbard #tulsigabbard #confirmationhearing #trumpadministration #sengillibrand #kristengilibrand #tiktkok #gabbardtiktok#bytedance #tiktoksecurity #tiktokban #pbsnews #newshour #pbsnewshour #tiktokbanusa
