Modern schools like existentialism, nihilism, and absurdism grapple with meaning in a secular or even Godless world. Other approaches, like humanism and naturalism, seek purpose through human values and the natural order. Below we survey these major perspectives, highlighting key ideas from Socrates and Aristotle through Nietzsche, Camus, Sartre, and beyond. We contrast views that life has inherent meaning (often religious or classical) with those that see no given meaning except what we create (often existentialist or nihilist). Ancient and Classical Philosophies Socrates and Plato: Wisdom and Virtue Socrates (470–399 BCE) famously held that an examined life – one of self-reflection and virtue – is essential. At his trial he declared *“the unexamined life is not worth living”*. In practice, Socrates sought truth and moral excellence above all, believing ignorance leads to wrongdoing and that a good life is tied to knowledge of the good. Plato (his student) extended this into an idealistic framework: humans should strive toward the highest Form of the Good. In Plato’s philosophy, understanding or communing with these absolute Forms (especially the Form of the Good) is what makes life significant. In sum, for Socratic/Platonic thought the purpose of life is ethical and intellectual: to know oneself, pursue wisdom, and live by virtue. Aristotle: Eudaimonia (Flourishing) Aristotle (384–322 BCE) also saw meaning in virtue, but with a more practical emphasis on eudaimonia – often translated as “flourishing,” “happiness,” or “living well.” Aristotle argued that every activity aims at some good, and the highest good (the ultimate goal) is the activity of a human being in accordance with virtue. In his Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle reasons that the human function involves rational activity; fulfilling this through virtuous habits brings the richest form of happiness. Thus
