"But Ariel is black!" the difference here is that Black Panther's race as a black African man is central to the plot. Wakanda is an African kingdom which isolated itself and hid its resources BECAUSE of white colonisers, so how on earth would Black Panther being white make any sense if Wakanda was founded on keeping colonisers out and preserving their African identity???
