It’s called the Ellis scanning pattern. They’re scanning the pool for any individuals who might enter the pool despite not knowing how to swim. Would you want them distracted and talking to one other or watching your kids who most likely cannot swim?

They really want the lifeguards to be talking to each other and not watching the pool. 😆 Then when some kid drowns they gone be the first saying “why weren’t they watching the pool!” They can’t be for real.

It's a technique used to keep them aware. lol They are counting. They need to be able to scan the entirety of the pool in 10 seconds or less. The idea is it take less than 30 seconds for a situation to become critical. You need to identify a potential drowning in less than 10 seconds and get to that person in less than 20 seconds.
