I tell my friends who want to pearn how to sew to start with a pirate shirt. it's mainly straight lines, so it's very good for when you're first learning, but it has tricky spots, such as attatching the collar, gathering in the sleeves and collar, and gussets. I only say to start small when the person learning is a child, but even then it's things like hand sewing stuffed animal clothes and such

So true! I always say buy cheap fabric at a thrift shop and make whatever you’re trying to make . Jump all the way in or just have someone make it for you if you’re scared 🤣

I always say just watch tutorials first and figure out what you’re wanting to make and try it out. If you make mistakes don’t feel bad about it because even really experienced seamstresses make mistakes!

I was told to start with pajama pants. and every time I tried to.ask for advice face to face with someone, they said "oh just google it" i stared at them as if to say "you don't think I tried that?" im a practical learner i literally need someone to walk me through it while I look at what I'm doing not watch someone else do it cause ill think of questions that need answering that they don't cover

The worst advice I saw was someone saying if you want a good beginner sewing machine here's 2 options the 1st is $700 but if that's too out of your price range here's a $500 one. No better way to gatekeep a hobby than to price most people out of it. My last sewing machine was around $100 and lasted me 10 years

THIS!! when i first got my machine, i made a skirt that same day, then a dress, then a patchwork skirt, then another dress, you learn so much more when you start by making the things you plan to make when you’re “good” cause then you learn what does and doesn’t work with certain projects - like with my first skirt, i couldn’t walk in it cause i made no room for my legs to room and it was just a straight down rectangle, but then i learned straight away that skirts need walking room
