After going back and forth about it in my head, I eventually sent this text to the 17 adults in our family group chat, many hours after the “party” had ended. “So, I'm just going to address it. I know why a couple of people couldn't make it today, and I totally get that. But it was pretty disappointing that no one showed up for ______’s birthday party today. That was pretty hurtful, and she definitely deserved better.” My daughter has continued to ask why no one came to her party, and I’m not even sure how best to address it. I told her that I was so sorry that no one came, and that next year we can go on a trip if she’d like. I’d rather do that than set her up for disappointment once again. I have reiterated to her that it’s nothing she did wrong, and that they all still love her very very much. The last thing I want is for her to blame herself. But I genuinely cannot come up with a fathomable reason to tell my now 5 year old that her own FAMILY wasn’t there for her big day. We are always there for their big days, and now I’m not even sure what to do moving forward. My heart is broken for my child, and I’m so angry and let down by my family that I’m struggling to figure out how to proceed appropriately. I wish I could say this is a first-time thing - no one showed up for my wedding shower or my baby shower. I guess I just never expected they’d do it to my child, too. 💔
