@polsci.bear: A quick, general guide on how to read & get important info from academic articles, especially the social sciences. #academic #guide #academia #journal #writing #reading #college #undergrad #gradschool #tips I was intentionally very loose w/ “prove/disprove” language here so please don’t jump on that part 😂
pedagogically, I'd like my students to answer one more question on top of the ones you've raised: do you have any questions about the paper you've read? you don't need to answer that to fully understand a paper, but thinking about what's missing from a paper and lingering questions you might have is great practice for identifying literature gaps

when i first submitted my article i forgot to even include a literature review 😭 thankfully peer review ripped me to shreds so the paper is published now and (hopefully) a better paper 😅

Ok this is a legit decent breakdown for students, but I was def ready to fight you at the start 🤣. My only quibble is that science doesn’t prove or disprove. Our results either support or don’t support our hypotheses. This whole prove language is only going to further confuse people outside of science. But I don’t agree that the general public (or people from other disciplines) can actually understand papers. Because they will not be able to adequately judge if the methods and statistical tests used were the right ones for the question the author(s) set out to answer. Plus too many people don’t understand statistics at all and regularly conflate even basics such as correlation does not equal causation. Hell, I’ve seen PhDs mess that up 😅

This is important work; also emblematic of why the PROCESS of college is important, despite what anti intellectuals would like others to believe.
