Grief, heartbreak, trauma—whatever it is, it hits differently for each of us. Sure, you might relate. You might understand the general shape of the ache. But my pain is mine. It’s the worst I’ve ever felt. Just like your pain is the worst you’ve ever felt. And that’s okay. That’s human. We’re allowed to hurt in our own way. So instead of trying to match pain for pain, try this: 🫶 “I can’t imagine exactly what you’re going through, but I’m here for you.” 💬 “You don’t have to explain it. I’m just here to listen.” That’s empathy. That’s what helps. Let’s stop assuming we know someone’s storm just because we’ve seen rain.
