Puerto Ricans born in the United States often carry a deep, unshakable love for their island, La Isla del Encanto. Though raised stateside, many feel a strong connection to Puerto Rico through family, culture, music, language, and traditions passed down through generations. For them, Puerto Rico will always be home regardless where they were born.

Facts, there are also more Ricans outside of the island than on the island so incorporating the diaspora is crucial to our collective liberation

My parents whitewashed me- didn’t teach me spainish- named me a white name and took me away from my culture as a child but when I went to PR for the first time, my spirit felt home.

It’s not about who is more Boricua this topic stemmed from how the experiences are indeed different from PR in the states & PR de la isla but it turned left to this rhetoric. I really dislike the division being created however, each distinct experiences should be respected regardless of where one was born & raised. 🇵🇷❤️

Boriqua is indigenous blood to Borikén. it doesn't matter if you live on the island or not, if you have indigenous Taino blood from Borikén then you are Boriqua

In my experience when I was living in Borikén, most (not all) Boricuas from the island I connected with would say those who were from “afuera” aren’t Boricua. At all! Yet the boricuas state side rep their flags donde quiera. I felt hurt & im not even boricua. Y es algo que no entiendo porque ustedes tienen una frase, si no me equivoco de una canción o poema, que dice “sería Boricua aunque naciera en la luna” so…🤷🏾♀️it’s important to unite & stand together, ¡ahora más que nunca!

I understand perfectly: My adoptive mother was from the Bronx but raised in Connecticut. Master degree in Social work, An elegant “brown” woman. When reached retirement age decided to move to Puerto Rico. More puertorican than anyone I ever imagined. Once decided to have one drink and went to a Bar in the Escambron area. My Mami Helen was beautiful and this gentleman invited a drink and in the middle of the conversation, “so you aren’t Boricua de pura cepa”?
It hurted so deeply. Was a very sad moment for her while she retired then moved to Arizona.
But I’ll never seen so much pain and embarrassment because she wasn’t born in the Island.
Miss my mamita every day. Discriminated by another puertorican was awful.
RIP mi Mami Helen #helenfigueroa #condNewSanJuan #islaverde

I grew up in the states. My father is white and my mom’s father is white, but the memories that stick with me the most are of mi abuela. Visiting her and eventually living with her. Puerto Rico is in my blood and I just recently came back from Puerto Rico to bury my titi Jenni and the sense of being Puerto Rican and the love I have for that gorgeous island had be come sooooo much stronger. I have books I have read and am reading to understand the history of the island from Puerto Ricans and books about Puerto Rico women and their stories to keep learning and not let the colonizers wipe it all out. YO TE QUIERO PUERTO RICO!!!

I think it’s funny cause their argument is “Boricua means from Borinken” which ultimately just means traces your roots to Borinken cause if full blooded taínos were still around and had children in the states are they gonna say they not boricua…………EXACTO

People need to stop wanting to be validated by strangers. If my parents were born here, I’m Puerto Rican 😂 the discrimination I’ve seen and experienced personally comes from ppl of the diaspora simply not being fluent Spanish speakers.

I feel this and really felt I had to fight growing up to prove I was Puerto Rican. My mom(white) from the states and my dad (Puerto Rican)born and raised in PR until his early 20s. I wasn't "white enough" in the states and in PR because my Spanish wasn't as good and because I was half white wasn't "really Puerto Rican" but I always stayed true to my Puerto Rican roots.

Some educators call this kind of erasure “deculturalization”, which is the ultimate product of colonization. But it seems like more and more, those of us in the diaspora are being called to be in touch with our identities, leading us back to the island. I’m with you, we are a beautiful and rich culture, with room for all of us! Which is exactly why you’re right, we need to make sure those colonizers don’t take our land right from under us.

My poppi was born in Puerto Rico My father was born in Puerto Rico but they had to immigrate to Michigan does that make me less Puerto Rican? No my dad proudly wore a Puerto Rican flag necklace we're from Michigan does that make me less Puerto Rican? The blood in my veins is Puerto Rican You cannot erase that. we still eat frijoles we still eat huevos just because we didn't grow up on the same island fully doesn't mean we're not part of the same blood.

This is crazy time-I had a director from PR tell me she was only true PR bc she was born and raise on the island and I wasn’t bc I was Florida (also note this against the law to say this on the clock and to hold funds against someone)

I'm so tired of people telling me I'm a fake boricua. DNA doesn't lie. I wasn't taught my language or history because my family refused to teach it. US born with pure Boricua blood and all the pride in the world. YO SOY BORICUA, PA QUE TU LO SEPA!!!!!!!
