@scrub_laddy: Hey there! So this is in no way supposed to mock patients who have expressive aphasia. I worked with stroke specific patients for 2 years prior to moving to the ER. I make videos like this to show people what this looks like. It’s when you can understand things but due to damage to the brain you are unable to communicate clearly often times resulting in a few words or phrases. The hope is that over time these symptoms will improve as the brain heals. That’s all, thanks! #healthcare #nurse #nursesoftiktok

It’s gotta be so frustrating for them. I feel so bad that I can’t help them with what they need

It’s so hard because you can see that they know what they want to say, but they just can’t. Breaks my heart 😭

I work on a neuro unit right now and have been there for almost 2 1/2 years. Expressive aphasia is just about the worst. Our therapy staff has cards patients can point at for things if they can't write for some reason. You just gotta have patience because as frustrated as you may be, imagine being the person that can't get their words out.

This is one of the hardest things to do without totally frustrating the patient beyond belief

I work in a nursing home and tbh, these are my favourite residents sometimes 😂 They're so patient with us, and there's an added level to the conversation when navigating dementia and aphasia. we have a good time 🫶

I had a gentleman come to get a Covid test and he did not speak English. I could get a translator no problem, but I couldn't tell what language he spoke! I was really stumped, but we got there!

“Table! Table table table!” it’s so frustrating for them because cognitively there’s no deficit. They know exactly what they want and exactly what they’re trying to say, and they know they’re not saying what they need to say to get their point across.

Had a patient like that once but the only words he could say was “oh god” so he’d press the call light and just say “oh gooooood” “oh god” and when we finally figured it out he threw his hands up and said “OH GOD!” And we all went “praise God we got it” lol

Dude. This is hilarious. My hubby had a stoke at 38 and this was our life for the first few days. Everything was 2001. The staff were amazing and with speech therapy he’s almost back 100%. The 2001 had me sad but giggling at the same time. 2001! 2001!!

Can you ask them to mimic the action of the word they're trying to say or does that not work?

my lady's word was no and help, it was very awkward when she would get frustrated and cry yelling no and help at me as we worked it out

I hate when people treat them or talk to them like they're demented. My dad had a major ischimic stroke with bad expressive aphasia, and now I have a bit of a soft spot for my aphasic pts

during my practicum for HCA, one of the tenants (assisted living) could only say olly and the care aides were able to have conversations with her! it was amazing to see and definitely a good experience to learn watching body language
