@kirstinczernek: At our first appointment with Luca’s oncologist, this is the first thing she said to us. Children with Down syndrome handle the chemo really well, they tend to not have as many negative side effects and their bodies respond really to the chemo to the point where they receive less of it. Not only that, their recovery rate is higher and relapse rate is less. Something about that extra chromosome that helps their little bodies in this way. Their chances of getting leukemia overall are higher but it comes with all these positives and advantages. I feel like this has all been the case for Luca. Thankfully he hasn’t had really any negative side effects from the chemo. We are finishing round 3 and thank God you would never know he was sick and in such a strong medication. If anything we have really experienced how well the chemo has worked to kill Luca’s cancer and give him back his life, you can just see it in his eyes. We are nearing the end of this round and it feels so good! Luca will most likely be coming home this week and it could be his quickest round yet without any viruses or infections 😭. He’s in great spirits and ready to be reunited with his siblings! After this we just have two rounds left which puts us ending treatment completely in late August/ September!! We are so close!!! I’m so grateful for Luca’s extra chromosome and thankful for how it has helped his body fight this fight!!
