@miriam_tinny: Replying to @lauren there’s a whole important component about surveillance obviously and I def don’t want to be too techno-optimistic naive about it because we all know how this big brother-esque can has turned out so far, but I feel like we’re so far away from that wonder and awe today. Feels like ancient time. #jennicam #livecasting #livestreaming #tech #innovation #internet #earlyinternet
I got my first email address in like 1990. Growing Up With The Internet was amazing because there were “first evers” happening all the time, and the internet wasn’t mapped in a microscopic (and exactingly filtered) way. You found out a lot of things by word of mouth and the discovery of things was genuinely exciting. Now everything is pre-packaged, filtered, censored and precisely market researched. It’s a bummer

reminds me of 2016, when periscope was the first main stream live streaming app with the current software and I would live stream at e11even Miami at 6 am, in the dj booth or with skrippas in the back room and I had ,600k followers, before banning was a thing for nudity or $mexual talk, it was amazing I even got invited to Jerry Springer (didn't go) once meta bought the software from periscope and started using it for FB and IG live.... I kept getting banned and making new accounts and finally got banned forever lol I still get flagged (facial recognition) til this day

Have you seen We Live in Public? That Josh Harris guy streaming his alternative commune 24/7 in the late 90s/early 00s was wild business

She did a podcast interview about a decade ago, it's called Reply All. She basically got the internet out of her system all at once and then never went on it again.

i checked on it regularly when it was happening. what i most appreciated at the time was how my interest became activated by whatever the snapshots happened to capture, from the mundane to the private. and it was before everybody started curating their online appearance, so it felt authentic. and vulnerable. it was also slow and clunky in a good way (like much of the internet at the time)

It sounds like we lost our “technology virginity” and can never again get that experimental/pure feeling you were mentioning

I remember when I got my first computer with the Internet. I think it was through Rent A Center and was a compaq. The novelty of then getting a digital camera and later a web cam was a wild thing to live through. I was just talking to my friend about how it felt when those online were in the minority. It was a niche interest. Honestly, it’s crazy when I think about growing up alongside tech and the internet

Coming of age, as the internet came of age was…lightning in a bottle.

thank you for talking about this!! I read about her recently in a book called How Sex Changed the Internet and the Internet Changed Sex and there are so many interesting (and hidden) women in our recent history of connectivity unintentionally pioneering in digital spaces
