i think you are 100% right. light was always impulsive and arrogant and that was his undoing in the end. especially overtrusting mikami and underestimating near. but i also think what people find unappealing by the second half is how fast near comes into action, w L we had some build up, but due to the timeskip we could not have that w Near.

i disagree , i loved the ending seeing light crumble and struggle to realise his perfect world isn’t possible , but near was far less engaging than L , and it kinda differed from the mind games and was instead trying to find the other death note

I also think he thought L would be his biggest opponent. So, he got cocky thinking he would win because he was better than Near and Mello. Well, in actuality, Near and Mello put together are like L. That’s one of the reasons Light lost.

Near absolutely "deserved" to win, I hate when people say he didnt. hes no more a copy of L than Mello is and you know WHY he seems like a copy? BECAUSE L HAND PICKED HIM TO BE HIS SUCCESSOR???? OF COURSE HES GONNA BE LIKE L HE WAS LITERALLY PICKED FOR THAT VERY REASON. mind you Near is just as smart as L 😭

I only dont like the end of it. In reality, Light would have won due to Mikami doing everything perfectly. However, Near ended up winning thanks to plot convenience and something physically impossible. Maybe if the final showdown happened a few days later than planned itd be more realistic because you can easily do that in the span of a few nights

I just like that dynamic between L and Light through the anime. For me, it was not the same with Near.

I wonder if the Near haters are forgetting there's a 5 year time skip between L's defeat and the SPK entering the fray. That's a lot of time to study L's case files, learn about your enemy, and plan for every contingency, all the while Light is getting comfortable and cocky without a decent challenge. Taking down the USA was huge, at that point he likely would have offed everyone still alive who knew about the Death Note and claimed the divinity he sought if the SPK resistance hadn't forced him to keep playing both sides. L's work and sacrifice + Near's deductions and strategy + Mello's unpredictability were all necessary to overcome Light's brilliance, and I think that sends a powerful message: "As long as even one person is still fighting, the war is not yet lost. But no one has to carry that burden alone."

i do really think light acted out of character towards the end though, he is a psychopath yeah but he’s been very calculated the whole time. the way his character was portrayed just doesn’t make it seem like he’s the type to lose his shit iygwim?

I agree with you. His freak out at the end is exactly what he would’ve done because he’s a big baby who wants his way. I think the second part feels slow and audience members are upset that we lost L, but I liked the progression and I like N and M

I think it just gets too convoluted. Especially the ending where Near and Light go back and forth like “I know that you know that I know that you swapped the fake pages for real pages so those fake pages were fake real pages so you swapped the fake real pages for real fake pages”

it’s always, “you just don’t get it”. Light is a God complex kid who wanted to play a great game, and prove his the best against the Smartest Guy, Smart guy vs Smart guy, the creating a new world is a bs excuse, white defeated L, and that was his biggest win, after everything didn’t really matter, I think the manga should had ended after L dies

I really wish Mello had gotten more to do in the anime and hadn’t died cuz they made it clear that Near and Mello could surpass L if they worked together, so it would’ve been nice if they put aside their differences to take down Kira and they could’ve been L together

Personally I think that the introduction of near and mello was just the attempt to drag out the anime and didn’t make sense like why does a child and a teenager have a greater legacy than L himself?
