This has been in existence for years. Only that it didnt go that viral like now. Infact when filling the DS160 online they do ask for your social media handles,your current/previous emails and secondary numbers. The BEST one can do is use a new email address linked to a new social media accounts or parents social media accounts like facebook. Even though the US govt is smart. Better this alternative. If you planning to apply to study in US for either undergraduate or graduate programmes I'd be willing to assist.
