This is called "drywall". Our walls are like this in the US because we have less stone quarries and a ton of Gypsum which is used to make drywall. This is simply the inner layer of the wall, behind it is the insulation, pipes and wiring, then beyond that is stone, brick, stucco or hard wood depending on the style of home. If you're imagining that you could break straight through an American wall to the outside, you cannot. Drywall is also never outside, only in. Americans do not desire hard walls on the interior, that would be considered harsh and maybe even dangerous to us. Even mansions have this as the interior wall, we like it.

It’s a cheaper alternative to fixing a hole that size so I get it. Obviously if it’s a bunch of little nail holes or something bigger than 4 inches this doesn’t work but there’s a niche here that makes sense
