@mattrieck: Is age discrimination really the reason that older people aren’t getting hired not getting hired? Or is it their own attitude? I often have older people come in to interview and in the process complain that no one is hiring…I am serious. Despite your age if you don’t have the attitude that you are there to learn something new, to take on new challenges, and to grow, any candidate is not going to be seen as attractive to companies. It’s really just coming in and not getting in your own way. We want to hire people with great skills, those take time to lean and experience. Make sure that you don’t get in your own way in the process. #agediscrimination #hiring #mattrieck #careeradvancement #interviews

It is age discrimination. I have killed it in interviews and not gotten the position. I then check LinkedIn to find out a younger person who has half my education a forth of my experience and a fraction of my skill got the position. A manager is going to hire a younger person over an older more experienced person nine out every ten times no matter how energetic the older candidate is.

Depends where you work. I work in technology and am 61 and have no issues. They like my experience in skill set and experience.

I’m getting sleepy :
Interviewed a man probably in his late 50s. Sat him down in front of a laptop. Asked him “how would you program this”, he did it in a way i hadn’t seen in 20 years. I said “there is a new way of doing this” he replied “this way works fine”. Him not getting the job was based on his attitude not his age

Your perspective is absolutely not complete and representative of most situations. There’s absolutely age discrimination, particularly in certain industries. Industries like AdTech, MarTech, and digital forward agencies are absolutely discriminating based on age. I have a cohort of dozens of colleagues that I’ve worked with over the years that are all in their late 40s to mid 50s who are 100% go-getters and extremely smart and experienced and have incredible attitudes but are getting rejected all the time. I’m not sure what type of older people you’re referring to within the Gen X age group but that’s not representative of what I’ve experienced in those around me have.

All of the people in here claiming this is untrue. I’m 53 and have no problem getting a job. I go in with the attitude that ‘I am who you are looking for and this is my job.’ I’ve been told I show my personality, which is desirable because it gives them a sense of how I would fit in with their department. You just have to know how to interview and how to show who you are.

I think age discrimination is out there. It depends on who is doing the hiring (are they older or younger) No calls for interviews BUT when we took off the dates of employment so they can’t estimate how old you are. Boom calls/ emails for interviews.

I tell the people in my interviews that I am familiar with your trade and I understand different houses have different tech with same tools it’s just a matter of process. I also state that I’m am malleable in how to see the same industry differently. Unlearning is a skill to have when broadening knowledge or perspective. You have to have team player mindset. Willing to lead in a vacuum. Have interest or stress the need to broaden skills. Then question where they are going and question what potential there is within.

after numerous strike outs on job apps and interviews, I gave up trying to get back into the corporate workforce. Started my own service business because I want nothing to do with that toxic corp environment anymore.

At 40, I was working on my degree. my resume showed I was in college. Time after time when I got to the interview, it was written all over their faces. I was much older than they expected = no job offer.

I brought an enthusiastic retired couple on. It seemed a good fit. Unfortunately, they had serious memory issues. Their technological skills were not at the level, and they had difficulty even logging on to emails. Left the store unlocked a couple of times. 6 months later they had very little understanding of what they were being trained to do. I felt really bad, but they just were not making any progress. This is not true for everyone, but it definitely was for this couple.

I agree 100%! Ditto on education and experience. Sometimes being set in ur ways and saying we didn’t do it that way can be a hindrance. I would rather higher someone with less experience but is trainable and has a good attitude. Fitting in with the culture and not rocking the boat in a negative way is more important than someone with tons of experience, but comes in causing problems.

I 💯 agree! Attitude is is a factor. In interviews I always say I am looking to work with motivated individuals and I’m looking to learn and bring value to the organization.
