@devindenault0: Remembering that time I worked at a store and the power went out for 22 minutes so this is what we were made to do. We threw out everything in all the coolers including meats, milk products, icecream, everything. Just sad. #creatorsearchinsights

The homeless could sue the store for liability

There’s a reason behind this though. There’s a legal standard to how long refrigerated and frozen food can remain un-chilled before it can’t be sold. It’s unlikely that someone would get sick from orange juice being out of the fridge for 21 minutes instead of 20, but if an employee gets caught doing it on camera both them and the store could get in trouble for health and safety risks. Some charities and foodbanks do accept the food, depending on how long out was out of the fridge, what product it is, etc. but for what can’t be donated, stores would rather lose whatever is there in merchandise than pay the fines.

I understand things like meat but why would you need to throw out orange juice?

the risk of it is if anything is bad and they sell it or give it for free they will get sued for selling expired products or by giving an expired product to a homeless that can lead up to attempted murder

15??? genuinely you guys are reading ur policy wrong or something because food safety laws literally say 2 hrs before you even have to consider, and only if its hit the temp danger zone, which is above 40 degrees 😭 wtf are yall doinggggg

that is such a sad amount of waste. i would happily sign a waiver to take some of that. and im sure many others would too. unfortunately companies dont want cant risk it because some scrounger will try to sue them.

do you want them to put products that have stayed in a non safe temperature on a shelf for customers to buy? that's a health code violation.

It takes hours for things to go bad that is perishable. Temperature danger zone. Takes longer then 15 minutes without cooling to reach quote on quote bad and cause sickness. Food on a counter takes couple hours to have bacteria. Something in a cooler will be longer.

Most coolers don't go above 40 that fast after losing power. The company will block off the doors to keep it cold, add dry ice to it, etc. until it gets fixed. Yes, some will be wasted but not all at least.
