depends on the sander and grit. no way am I moving that slow with a 80 grit belt sander?

no it's not. you shouldn't use these little sanders for a start and evenly go along the board with a block or even a long belt sander

Orbital sanders with lower grits have to be moved faster than 1” per second or you get the swirl marks, which are a pain in the a— to sand out. Move the sander lightly across the surface to get a flat even surface and make multiple passes before moving up in grit. Practice, practice, and oh yeah, practice.
