@bigbluephotoboat: Hello from one of the ocean's most charismatic marine mammals, the humpback whale! We're not quite sure why humpback whales tail slap, but this individual certainly was happy to slap. A smaller individual, this younger fellow decided to engage in a lively round of slaps for over a hour. Some scientists have speculated that whales use these slaps as a form of communication, while others have hypothesized that the slap acts like a defense against predators or a way to scare fish schools into manageable, easy to capture groups. In this case, l'd say this whale was being a bit of a show off, much to the delight of all onlookers.#humpbacks #ocean #whalebehavior
