It's because in their schools and even in pop culture like commercials and anime openings etc they here katakana English, which is English pre-written in Japanese letters, causing them to read out differently than they're pronounced, so they have a base understanding of English, it's just heavily accented

The reason this works is because when Japanese people take English in school they learn from other Japanese people. Unless their teacher has a perfect English accent then they are learning the words with Japanese phonetics

omg this is so funny, i one time got a table with japanese people and asked if they wanted dessert and they had no clue what i was saying, proceeded to pull up the translator, they read it and were like OHHHH DESSERT-O 🤯🤯🤯

It’s actually easier to understand because the phonetics sound more similar to their style, it sounds goofy to Native English speakers but to the Japanese it’s a lot easier to understand since it sounds similar

Some Japanese speakers know smth like katana or kakana or smth and it’s basically where words sounds like others, like ice cream sounds like ice cream, so train station might sound similar.
