A lot of people have forgotten how to have important conversations. We chat and swap news, we make small talk. But it's rare to have those kind of conversations which change you in some way. It's rare to have transformational conversations. This is one of the many things I spoke to Agnes Callard about in this week's Mini #Philosophy interview. Callard argues that we need to bring a bit more of Socrates into our conversations. There are many ways you can define the #Socratic method, but in our conversation we talked about two. The first is that we should pursue a point to its end. If somebody says something, follow up on it. If somebody says, 'Well, I believe that war is right,' then ask questions, probe, examine. The second point is to recognise that talking is a kind of thinking, and it's often an important one. When two people sit down to dissect an idea or consider the implications of a thought, then something magical happens. Yes, you have the collaborative effect of two minds looking at one problem, but also you find your own thought patterns will change, because externalising an idea with somebody else and examining an idea as if from outside will let you think on it anew. We all need good conversations, because in good #conversation we find something out about ourselves, but also because we come one step closer to something that looks a bit like #truth .
