Serena Williamsโ€™ story is one of the most powerful examples of how deeply broken our healthcare system isโ€”especially for Black women. @Serenawilliams is one of the wealthiest, most famous women in the world, with access to resources and the ability to advocate for herself. And yet, she still faced dismissal and delayed care. Imagine what happens to women without her advantages every single day. This is why maternal mortality rates in the U.S. are abysmalโ€”and theyโ€™re even worse for Black women, who are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. This isnโ€™t just about individual doctors or nurses; itโ€™s about a system thatโ€™s been failing womenโ€”and especially women of colorโ€”for centuries. Itโ€™s no wonder so many women are turning to alternative wellness spaces, even ones with problematic roots like the Trad Wife or MAHA movements. When the medical system feels actively hostile, people look for care elsewhere. But the solution isnโ€™t to abandon scienceโ€”itโ€™s to demand better. Better representation (only 2% of U.S. doctors are Black women). Better research (womenโ€™s health issues like PCOS and endometriosis are woefully underfunded). Better accountability. Serenaโ€™s story is a reminder that we need to advocate for ourselves and each otherโ€”but also that advocacy shouldnโ€™t be necessary to receive basic, life-saving care. The system needs to change. And it starts with all of us demanding it. What do you think? Have you or someone you know experienced medical dismissal?
