That last line should be in the MM as to where mimics come from. "Mimics are created by the paranoid imagination of a group of adventurers, much the same way beholder-kin are spawned by the dreams of beholders."

I once had a player in my game so paranoid that he had picked his race for the best Darkvision you could get, so he would never be unable to see in the dark. Used his magic item picks for boots of flying to avoid traps on the ground, and a ring of sustenance so he would be save from poisoned food or water.

I ran Ravenloft and was feeling cruel, as they approach a door they check for traps...nothing, so they say ok we open the door, I innocently ask what way do you turn the handle clockwise or anticlockwise? 30 mins later theyre still at the fucking door

my DM did this to us. I was arguing that a trained assassin that hunted werewolves would have booby trapped their window so people couldn't just sneak in.this is how a claymore ended up attached to the window.

I red once that a closet mimic also use the items stored inside himself. So I created a scroll mimic, with true resurrection and animate object spell written on it. As soon as the wizard took the scroll work both hands, his hands became stuck and a big mouth swallowed his head. The wizard couldn't perform any kind of magic and the only way to free the wizard was by set the mimic on fire and hope the wizard world survive. (The true resurrection spell healed the ofcourse the mimic and the wizard, but it was fun to see them struggle). After the encounter they looted the rest of the room, not knowing that everything was some kind of mimic. That had even a bag of holding mimic that loved to eat gold
