Yall need to realize if THE fujimoto wanted to make a lesbian love story he would just do it without any of the hold backs like other mangakas do with making them close friends, the man dose not care enough to censor his work like that

i really like this interpretation but as an artist i feel like look back also speaks to this weird phenomenon we go through as artists wherein we get to a point where we really don’t even “enjoy” making art all that much; we spend hours making art and trying to improve only to plateau or even regress for very little recognition or reward, often to the extent to which creating is more of a stressor than anything else, but we can’t stop making art - like an itch you can’t help but scratch despite knowing it’s only going to hurt afterward, it’s impossible to ignore that calling once you’ve started making art - and i saw a lot of that experience in fujino

i definitely agree with your take! i your interpretation also it clears up why the last scene of the movie is just fujino drawing. it might seem strange at first, since fujino’s one reason for drawing is gone. it seems to go against your point. but it makes more sense when you realize fujino not only draws for kymoto, but to be closer to kymoto. because when is kymoto farthest away than in death?

look back is fujimoto love letter to his assistance who start becoming their own mangaka such as hell paradise, spyxfamily and dandandan. hence why he wanna stop drawing and just focusing on story because his fav assistance no longer with him.

I can totally see where you’re coming from but that’s the thing, this isn’t all that different from his other wrks, they are all emotional character driven stories, instead of viewing it from a doomed romance perspective it’s more of a look into fujimoto himself between the pure artist vs the selfish creator

in my opinion it definitely goes deeper than that though— its not just that fujino wants to be with kyomoto, but the idea is that fujino’s motivation is driven by the idea of people looking up to her work. kyomoto looks at fujino’s back to follow her footsteps as motivation to be as great, and fujino looks back to see the people following her back and looking up to her as her inspiration. hence, “look back”

Look back made me ugly sob because the love between the two of them was so palpable whether you read it as platonic or romantic. It made me think of the friends i had who I'd draw things for specifically to impress them-it really is such a pure joy to have a bond with someone founded on creating something out of nothing. I can't imagine the devastation of having that light ripped away from you

this movie really makes me sad. Fujimoto has broken my heart so many times. with Look Back, Chainsaw Man, and Goodbye Eri. its to the point that I'm afraid to check out Fire Punch because Fujimoto is the king of making me cry.

Interesting video, I interpreted the alternate reality section as Fujino imagining "What if I never brought her out if her room" because she felt directly responsible for Kyomoto's death. The ending of that sequence could then mean that despite all the guilt and pain she felt, she still couldn't imagine a world where she and Kyomoto dont draw manga together
