their forewings, called elytra, are hardened into a shell which must be opened before they can use their hindwings for flight, making their flight movements bad and swkward. also some beetles have a relatively large and heavy body, which can make it harder to maneuver in the air

Also almost all insects have 4 flight wings, with only a few clades not having them, including the beetles, true bugs, and the flies (including mosquitoes). The flies have 2 wings used for lift, but have evolved their 2 hind wings into counterweights that spin, allowing for better maneuverability. Many of true bugs (things like stink bugs) have a leathery carapace similar to beetles that evolved from their forewings, but it isn’t quite as bulky allowing them to still be good at flying. Beetles have 2 flight wings, but their forewings evolved into hard elytra that protect their wings well enough when burrowing, but it makes them heavier and more bulky, causing them to not fly well. Beetles in general tend to burrow and live a majority of their life in or on the ground, causing them to not need to be amazing at flight, just enough to escape danger or move large distances. I’m not an entomologist so please correct me if I’m wrong.
