this reminds me SO much of corking!! I used to do it as a kid but lost the kit, and I didn't realize there was such an easy way to do it without any extra supplies - I know what to bring to doctors appointment waiting rooms now!

if you add beads to the strings and drop one every time you move a string, you'll get a beaded rope. adding a weight to the end of the braid gives you a more even finished piece. and adding bobbins to the strings means the rope can be as long as you want. I made a dog leash that way
