@genericartdad: What happens when you pass out around a bunch of med students? You might not like the answer. A 2024 study found that just over 40% of osteopathic med students had performed pelvic exams on patients while under anesthesia. Students are actually often unaware if the patients gave explicit consent or not. Historically teaching hospitals have operated under what’s referred to as “implied consent”. If you’re consenting to an operation involving medical students, you should know the students are there to practice. These examinations obviously happen more frequently to women, but it’s actually older men who are often the recipients of surprise rectal exams. Sorry grandpa.
A woman I used to work with sued the hospital that took out her gallbladder because she went into severe anaphylactic shock. Turns out she was allergic to the lube they put inside her for the pelvic exam they never mentioned. She won that lawsuit.

If it’s just for medical studies, why does it mainly happen to women? Don’t they want to learn about men too?

I was airlifted to a teaching hospital at 14 after being hit by a car on my bike. When we got there (my parents still on their way by car) I was wheeled into what looked like a classroom with about 10-12 med students watching. My clothes were cut off including my underwear. The doctor kept looking back at the students saying things like “now we can tell she’s about 12-15 given her development” and things like that. I was given a pelvic exam against my consent. Not once was I looked in the face, not once was I comforted or told what was going on. It was so traumatizing I ever even told my parents. I was given a neck brace and sent home the next day. I still think about it 20 years later. Thanks university health of San Antonio!

Got my appendix taken out at 15, I specifically told all my doctors I did not want any other examinations under anesthesia and they laughed in my face. I woke up to them telling me they did a FULL pelvic examination while they were in there as well as other things. Never felt so violated in my life. I still don’t trust surgeons or doctors now.

ladies i had this happen. put in a tampon before you go in. it doesn't always stop them but it's a huge deterrent and at least you'll know if they remove it. I'm sorry there's not a better solution

So womens biology is still severely under researched and underfunded even tho 1:3 women have unconsensual exams? What are we doing with the findings from these uneeded exams? or are we just feeling up unconscious women?

As a medical student, I got into an argument with my ETHICS PROFESSOR about this. He thought it was totally fine. For the greater good and "not hurting anyone." 🚨 🚨 🚨
Thankfully I was never asked to do an inappropriate exam during surgery. That's a red line I wouldn't cross, but I would've literally been putting my career on the line. Med schools don't like you rocking the boat, which is how so many toxic elements like this are able to persist in medicine.

I just realized something. I wonder if they got the whole “the cervix doesn’t have any nerve endings and therefore can’t feel pain” because all of their “training” came from someone being unconscious. So OF COURSE they didn’t respond to pain!

We need to be ANGRIER about this. As an SA survivor, I shouldn’t have to fear MY DOCTOR. I have zero trust for anyone and now that includes medical professionals because they think it’s okay to just violate me while I’m unconscious.

WHY. ARE. MED. STUDENTS. STILL. PRACTICING. ON. LIVE. PATIENTS. When I was a kid my mom said some dental students could practice on me (did not ask me) they TORE up my gums I was bleeding so much it hurt so much. And they were just like you’re fine. And then people wonder why children, adults even, hate hospitals.

I found out that when I broke my arm as a child (I was 9) and they sedated me to rreset it, they did a pelvic exam on me. A CHILD.
The only reason. fund out was because I got my patient records from the hospital and it made a small note of it. No permission asked, nothing. They still did it, and now I have nightmares about it

The real issue isn't that this isn't illegal, it's that it has to be made illegal in order for doctors not to abuse their position and violate their patient. If a woman came in, unconscious and needing urgent medical attention and was likely to be unconscious for a length of time, then a female nurse must be able to check to see if they don't have a tampon or other similar thing inserted for the safety of the patient. This shouldn't have to be a legal loophole.

I hate that I have to make this comment on tiktok. However, I went in for a papsmear, my doctor at the time was an older woman but seemed decent every other time I went to her. She knew about my PTSD. As soon as I was in sterups she walks in WITH A MED STUDENT because she's TRAINING and asked me WHILE MY LEGS WERE UP AND FULLY EXPOSED if it was ok for them to help, then said "oh its fine shes a girl". She could have atleast asked when I was in the waiting room or something. Not that my answer mattered.
