Keep going. The monologue is inspired by my current feature. The thing about my current feature, an aspect I really love, is that there are deliberately cliché aspects. Things that initially set the reader up to have very specific ideas about who the characters are and what the story is. And the reason is so that the subversion that inevitably comes is even more impactful. The character revelations mean more. Not to mention, I love cliché stuff when it’s done well. I have yet to see a movie that truly portrays Los Angeles the way I see it. And that was the initial spark for this idea. Something that the in-between people can relate to. The people who love Hollywood and have a dream, but lack the social skills necessary to make those magical connections. The people who have been here for a long enough time to lose that initial high, but they haven’t given up. Yet. We see movies about young dreamers all the time. And movies about the people who have already made it. So, I’m just trying to explore the reality of the people that make up most of Hollywood. As we know, most people don’t make it. Most people give up after a few years. But for the people who are stuck because they have nowhere else to go, even though hope has almost vanished, the only thing left is to keep going. That’s the only option. Either that or letting resentment win. One of my favorite movies is La La Land, which we can all agree is extremely cliche. But it works. Yes, because it’s a musical, but also because the characters are so likable. And I mention La La Land because the best little quote I’ve gotten about my screenplay, from a Blacklist review, is that “This is like La La Land meets Taxi Driver. A cinephiles wet dream.” I fucking love that. And sometimes all it takes is one person telling you something like that to keep you going for a little bit longer. ⁉️What’s your favorite movie that takes place in Los Angeles? #filmmaking #filmmaker #filmtok #indiefilm #shortfilm #shotwithiphone #cinematography #cinema #screenwriting #directing #acting #losangeles #hollywood #motivation #nevergiveup
