Imagine if a school yard bully with a long track record of unprovoked assault claimed to be the only person safe enough to be armed.

As a Canadian, I don’t think the US is responsible enough to have Nuclear weapons

I also firmly believe that part of the obsession with other countries have this capability is projection. Being the only county that has used it requires us to project on others that they are a bigger risk than ourselves.

Sadly, any chance of a denuclearized world went out the window the moment fat man and little boy took flight. It was opening Pandora’s box and became the burden of the US for eternity. Also the rest of the world is reliant on the US for security, thus the overinflated defense budget. Our only recourse as individuals is electing leaders who we be responsible stewards of the burden.

The lifetime is at least to 2070. Navy Submarines particularly cost a fortune and the new B-21. And we didn’t push for non-proliferation until the 5 perm UN members had them (late 60s)…then it was a thing. Btw - we spend more than Russia now because they already modernized their weapons. Not a hawk but I know this

That’s because the largest industry sector in the US is military.

I think we should also count the number of nuclear bombs we dropped / detonated for nuclear testing. That’s a lot of money and environmental damage.

I believe that “Nuclear War: A Scenario” by Annie Jacobsen should be required reading in the USA. It’s terrifying. I think we’d likely be less cavalier about the idea of nuclear warfare if we knew the history and reality of what dropping one bomb on any populated area would be. It would essentially be the end of humanity and the end of our planet. Unfortunately, it’s probably not a matter of if but when. And it’s a godawful, terrible way to go

People have no concept of all the bits and pieces of all of this. How entire cities have been built up around literal missiles. It's an entire machine.

Carl Sagan gave a great speech on a very similar topic to a room full of government officials. The room was silent.

13N USAF...it takes sooo much effort and matience to keep these weapons. They do NOT have an infinite shelf life. MAD is not a cheap way to deter war.

I read somewhere that the reason we use uranium instead of thorium for nuclear power is because thorium doesn't produce weapons-grade plutonium.

I don't know that I've ever really considered how much of the military budget might be going to maintaining nuclear weapons. I'm also a veteran.

Social services being treated as market commodities = profit. Nuclear program funded by govt = also profit, the capital just flows from the gov into the private sector.

It’s because Americais better than every other country. We take care of our citizens, are good stewards of resources, don’t fund genocides on a regular basis, treat our women well, don’t start wars under fake pretenses to take materials from other countries, and really work to uphold democracy. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA…*sob*
