An acre is 40,000 square feet. The least you could do is subdivide a small portion of that for their granny flat, considering they gifted it to you in the first place. If you have such an issue giving back a slither of a gift from elderly people (who you will outlive), maybe you did do something sky initially.

Since they gifted you the whole land you can also gift them part of it, they are your husband parents at the end. Not worth it to fight with family over the money, we are all gonna die, at least die peacefully. My opinion

Why are they fighting? My mother invested in mine and my husbands home in order to live in the small unit under our house, we have a contract that she has an investment of 25% of our home. So if we sell we give her 25%, if she dies, my brother and I split the 25% and I have a 1 year option to buy him out if we don’t want to move. It’s pretty simple. Draw up an investment contract so they don’t feel like they have nothing.
