Recommend reading "1491”. 400 years ago it would have been gnarly like that. 600 years ago it would have been mixed wood with open floors managed by burns, likely with a lot of cultivated food and medicinal plants.

I don't know anything about the ecology of this place but I would think by making those canopies it will let the understory plants get a chance to fill in and spread throughout the forest as it becomes more biodiverse cause rn that forest just has trees and no layers
