As an indigenous person, Pocahontas was always my favorite Disney princess, I know the story is inaccurate but seeing someone who looked just like me made me feel represented 🤍

With all of its shortfalls, I will say that watching Pocahontas as a kid made me see native Americans more as people with a rich culture and understand that white people did not want to be friends with them. In the most kid friendly way possible, but still.

Wild that they worked with indigenous people and STILL got it SO wrong.

As a Native American woman this movie brings up such conflicting emotions. Now that I’m older I can see how badly they romanticized Matoaka’s unfortunate life story, but growing up I loved having a Native American princess

She is my favorite princess and this is my favorite movie. However not for the historical inaccuracies, but for the beauty. She was so free and so independent and strong. I wish Matoaka had not gone through the abuse and trauma she endured.

As an adult, I’m aware of all the problems with this film. But as a young child in the 90s I loved having a princess that looked like me. She was also the only Barbie that I ever had that looked like me, and that made me feel beautiful.

I know this movie has a lot of complications and it’s not appropriate to rewrite historical figures especially people of color, but it was my favorite Disney movie as a kid and truly taught me to love and appreciate nature and respect the indigenous peoples. It really was a movie that radicalized me and I’m thankful for it.

i HATED this movie as a little kid i always thought it was so disrespectful never watched it all the way through but recently rewatched fully the message was good and the drawings and depiction of natives and land was beautiful sad and poor execution w John Smith icl it was cute as a fictional love story but cruel and inconsiderate compared to the historical truth

It’s a controversial film for accuracy but they really did an amazing job with the music. Still one of my favorite music soundtracks. It’s truly beautiful.

It's a Disney movie. It's not a history documentary. Just like Mulan. It's not meant to be factual. It's too bad they didn't choose another name for Pocahontas. People would stop comparing and complaining.

Admittedly, I am a white man but...I have never understood the whole "inaccuracies" argument. The film was never meant to reflect historical facts. It's an animated DISNEY movie!!! LOL...Never did I expect "truths".
Personally, this is one of my absolute favorite Disney movies. I prefer the ethnic princesses - Pocahontas, Mulan, and Tiana. And the divine Vanessa Williams singing the radio version of "Colors of The Wind" is/was perfection 👌!!!
"If I Never Knew You" is a very nice song. Mel Gibson has a decent voice. I didn't care for Judy Kuhn's vocals. Waaaay too Broadway. I still play it on occasion though. 😊

making a live action pocahontas is one of the few disney classics that makes sense to remake live...because its based on a real historical figure they could do it based on the actual history and somewhat redeem themselves. there are less overt magic and fantasy elements that are difficult to recreate as well.
