Belgian here,and I am 100% a socialist,but the problem is our taxes are not used in the best way.other countries have less tax but more effective public services. We’re paying wayyy too mich for what we get in return.

The problem isn’t how much we pay for taxes. The problem is 1. We are not getting nearly enough in return for how much we pay. 2. The rich either don’t pay any taxes or they pay the same percentage as the average working person, someone who earns 30k a year is obviously going to struggle a lot more than someone who earns 600k a year if they have to pay 50% in taxes. And before anyone starts with the ‘they should just get a different job’ the jobs that earn so little still need to be done, there will ALWAYS be someone working those jobs and they should be able to live a comfortable life regardless of how useless you think that job is.

and after all that. Belgian goverment says there isnt enough money for the defence bugel and the pensions are too expensive. they want us to pay more. highest taxes country in the world. yet its not enough.

Brit here. Lived in Belgium 20 years. Love it. Yes, taxes are high. But health care as good as any in world and affordable. My kids uni fees were 800€/yr. Excellent cheap public transport. Excellent food. Many cultural events: arts, music. Etc.

Most inefficiënt western country. We pay so much tax and the roads are still worse than any other European country. Very low pensions compared to neighboring countries who pay less taxes.

belgian's social security system is amazing, my aunt worked a lot of years there but due to her health problems she's unable to work, they provide her house, a "salary" and they also allow her to work certain hours per week if she can (she works every time she can)
