I don’t know if anyone will ever read this, but this is something I want to share about my country, Thailand.
Some Cambodians say that Thai history is fake. But if that were true, we wouldn’t be taught about how we lost land to Burma in the past. There wouldn’t even be movies about it. If our history were biased, it would only show Thailand winning every battle. And yet, we were never taught to hate the Burmese people. In fact, we were taught that the Burmese kings of that time were truly brilliant and capable.
Some Cambodians claim that Thailand is afraid of Cambodia becoming more developed. But how could that be, when there are many countries far more developed than us? In school, our teachers even praise the Philippines for their excellent English skills and admire Vietnam, which may have once been behind Thailand, but thanks to their efforts and abilities, they are now ahead of us.
What really puzzles me is how Thai traditional clothing appears in Cambodian textbooks and is claimed as their own. How can the Cambodian history in their textbooks be accurate if they even need to lie to their people about something like national costumes?
And I genuinely wonder—why does Cambodia hate us so much? Many Cambodians come to work in Thailand, receive medical care in Thailand, and yet many never pay for those treatments, leaving Thai hospitals in debt. Still, we have never once denied them medical care.
And one more thing—even though Thailand has lost land or been in conflict with other countries, we were never once taught to hate those countries. But in Cambodia, it seems like whenever there’s a political issue, they always portray Thailand as the villain.
During the Khmer Rouge era, did you know that aside from other countries that came to help Cambodia, Thailand was one of them?
