“It’s never been implemented right”- this is 100% truth!

Thank you!! PBIS done correctly can make a positive impact! Especially being intentional about teaching and re-teaching behaviors.

When it comes to SEL, PBIS very rarely is implemented right. I was at a school who did Conscious Discipline and I liked that and I’m now at a school who does Leader in Me and I haven’t figured that out yet…..

It is a great and effective way for positive reinforcement if it is utilized with Fidelity. However, like much things in education people pick and choose from it and it doesn’t work! Trust me when it’s done with Fidelity kids don’t come back with juice boxes, lol behaviors do change And it’s not a one year process. It’s like one to five year process implementation with Alll stake holders involved however it’s normally the administration coming up with the stuff and just puking it out to everybody, which is why it doesn’t work.

The problem is that you can’t *only* have rewards. There have to be consequences for the disrespectful, disruptive, horrifying behavior these kids exhibit. I did not go to graduate school to watch kids throw art supplies around my room, cuss without hesitation, rough house, destroy the learning environment, etc etc so I can spend my time after school writing them up AGAIN and they can “have a conference “ with the principal, or get a lunch detention. OVER AND OVER. The teaching environment in America is intolerable. The kids know they can get 70 referrals but they just come back to the classroom and do it again. They well-behaved kids are missing out on an education because we struggle so much to keep the disruptive kids in school. It’s not fair.

I LOVE PBIS. After 4 years in a toxic environment I am SO EXCITED to be going to a school that uses PBIS.

The only way for PBIS to work is if ALL the teachers know how to implement correctly. One teacher can dismantle it. lol. All behavior is communication.

Thank you for helping to clarify. Now to address the “well if it’s too hard to implement correctly then the system is bad and we shouldn’t do it!” My answer is the training and philosophy isn’t deeply understood and that’s why it’s done ineffectively.

My school had PBIS. They called it RamBucks and every Friday they would push the RamCart with stuff you can buy with RamBucks like candy, t-shirts, snacks.

I don’t even believe it works if done with fidelity… it’s an excuse.

I have seen a program ripped apart and rebuilt, and that be what makes it work. PBIS simply cant be half done. it has to be well executed on all levels

I implement it in my class as an economy. We treat the classroom as workplace where hard work earns bonuses.
