It’s because publishing companies don’t want unvented material. They don’t wanna have to go through a slush pile to find that rare diamond. At least most publishing companies. They will periodically make exceptions and accept unsolicited material. Which is how I ended up getting my first contract. I couldn’t find an agent and I submitted directly to an editor at a publishing company and they plucked my novel out of the slush pile. After I got the contract, then I got an agent.

Exactly! It’s nothing but a money grab because there was a time when people walked onto a set or went directly to the publishers bow we have to be accepted and represented to prove our worth. And whats worse is that everyone gets paid before you see a penny.

I couldn’t agree with you more. That’s funny, because I just started my TikTok page to talk about the same thing. It was probably one of the most frustrating things I went through when I wrote my book.

You could always self publish and do well then you’ll have more leverage. Thats the route I took

I had two literary agents who did zilch for me. I found my first publisher on my own. Agent took the money. Second agent retired without selling anything. I had already worked in Big Publishing and saw behind the curtain. So I started my own press to publish other authors of fiction back in 2012. I’ve also published my own novels. I know how to do everything they do and maintain control. Make your own way if you can. Good luck.

Agents are the gatekeepers—to get our submissions to the 20-something interns who vet manuscripts before promising ones get to overworked editors. There was a huge Pink Slip Tuesday back in… 2010? Maybe where a to. If editors got laid off so the ones left are overworked. They don’t have time to go through the thousands of submissions. Yes, I have been published by Penguin/RandomHouse by my 2nd agent, pinned by Sourcebooks with first agent. Now on my 4th. First left the industry, 2nd retired, 3rd didn’t work out…. Fun times (not.). Best way to meet an agent is network at author events (not reader events). Network and pitch. I actually got the request to submit from a S&S editor between agents #3&4. We will be submitting this fall (publishing shuts down for the summer.).
