Heaven has gained our angel, Shakira 🕊️💔 Shakira was as fierce as she was loving, and she fought so hard these past few months to stay with us for as long as she could. We tried everything we could, but her cancer was incredibly aggressive and eventually spread to her bone marrow, making it impossible for her to create red blood cells. She gained her wings peacefully, in her favorite spot, basking in the sun at home, knowing just how deeply she was loved. Our hearts and souls are completely broken. We’ve lost one of our best friends, a member of our family, and it still doesn’t feel real. Shakira grew up with us. She was always by our sides through high school, college, and beyond. She was the best big sister to every sibling and foster who came through our home. We’re not the only ones grieving. Our pack said goodbye too, and those closest to her have been mourning her loss just as deeply. We’ve been doing our best to hold it together for them, to make sure each of them feels how deeply they’re loved. Words can’t express how much we appreciate every one of you who has reached out these past months with advice, encouragement, love, and support. Just checking in on her and on us meant more than we can ever say. We want to thank Dr. Townsend, Dr. Snowden, Dr. Freeman, and the entire vet team for giving us more time with our girl and doing everything you could to try and save her. 🙏 We’re so incredibly grateful for the extra months we had together, to take her to her favorite spots, create more beautiful memories, and show her every single day just how truly cherished she was. To our sweet Shakira darling: We still can’t fathom not seeing you walk through the door to check on us. You were our shadow, our constant companion, our heart. Life feels incomplete without you. You were everything to us, always the best girl to the very end. You knew we did everything we could to save you, our love. This isn’t goodbye. One day we’ll be together again, where there’s no more cancer, no more pain, and you can dig as many holes as you want, swim all day, and be surrounded by all the sticks your heart desires.
