You work to live not live to work. I don’t understand how you couldn’t get the implication of the initial question. “Live as though you’re going to live longer” isn’t sufficient advice. He’s not “making it up” that’s gaslighting, he has actual evidence of 2 siblings and a parent dying suddenly in their 50’s, that’s enough to make anyone question their mortality and question what’s really important in life. Happiness is the key factor here, sounds like they have equity if they can afford half a million, so if they can afford to take the hit then go for it. How can they sacrifice a future that’s not guaranteed. Live now!

Financially it dosnt make sense. How about cutting back on the hours like go part time. They could cut back on their expenses and work less. I wouldn’t risk running out before dying based off a gut feeling. 58 is still early to retire.
